The world’s top wheelchair athletes, including four Israeli players—Adam Berdichevsky, Guy Sasson, Sergei Lysov, and Maayan Zikri—are competing fiercely at Stade Roland Garros during the 2024 Paralympics in Paris. The prestigious tournament, hosted on the same courts as the French Open, offers a global platform for these athletes to represent their countries and demonstrate their remarkable skills.
Why Wheelchair Tennis Won't Be at the US Open This Year
This year's US Open will not feature the men’s, women’s, or quads wheelchair tennis events, as many of the world’s best wheelchair tennis players, including the Israeli stars, are in Paris for the Paralympics. While the junior wheelchair tournament will proceed as scheduled at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Queens, New York, the absence of the senior wheelchair athletes is due to the tournament’s overlap with the Paralympic Games, which takes place every four years.
Israeli Players Making Their Mark
The Israeli contingent is off to a fantastic start in Paris. Notable among them is Guy Sasson, who recently secured the French Open quads title at Stade Roland Garros. Now, alongside his teammates Berdichevsky, Lysov, and Zikri, Sasson is competing for Paralympic glory in the wheelchair tennis event, which began on Friday and runs through September 7.
Each of these players brings a wealth of experience and determination to the court. Adam Berdichevsky, who also serves as Israel’s flag bearer, Sergei Lysov, and Maayan Zikri are all eager to put their best foot forward in this highly competitive tournament.
