At its "Made on YouTube" event on September 18, 2024, YouTube announced an exciting new feature called Communities, a dedicated space for creators and their fans to interact. The Communities feature functions similarly to Discord servers, but is integrated directly into a creator's YouTube channel. With this move, YouTube aims to offer creators an alternative to platforms like Discord or Reddit for fan engagement.
What is YouTube Communities?
The Communities feature allows viewers to not only leave comments on videos but also post their own content and engage with other fans directly on the creator's channel. This feature introduces a new layer of interaction beyond just watching videos and leaving comments. Fans can share images, videos, and opinions, fostering a deeper connection over shared interests. For example, a fitness creator’s Community might feature posts from fans showcasing their latest workout or hike.
Who Can Access Communities?
Initially, this new feature will be available only to subscribers of the creators who have access to the feature. It will give fans the chance to spark discussions, post their own content, and share ideas with both the creator and the broader community.
YouTube's Vision for Communities
Bangaly Kaba, YouTube's director of Product Management, shared the vision behind Communities: "It’s a place where fans can come together, not just to interact with the creator but with each other, creating a more dynamic and interactive fan experience." This fosters a closer relationship between creators and subscribers, moving beyond simple updates and video uploads.
How Does it Differ from YouTube’s Community Feature?
It's important to note that the Communities feature should not be confused with YouTube’s older Community tab, which was launched in 2016. The original Community tab allows creators to share text, images, and updates with their audience, but it doesn’t enable viewers to interact with each other. With Communities, YouTube is introducing a more forum-like, interactive space where fans can participate in discussions, share content, and create a sense of community.
When Can We Expect Communities to Roll Out?
Currently, YouTube is testing the Communities feature with a small group of creators on mobile devices. The company plans to expand testing to more creators later in 2024, with full access expected to roll out to additional channels in early 2025.
Stay tuned as YouTube continues to innovate and provide more ways for creators and their fans to connect in meaningful ways!
